WARRINGTON Wolves have parted company with their head coach Daryl Powell.

The club have confirmed the departure of the 58-year-old following this afternoon's 42-6 defeat at Wakefield Trinity - their sixth in a row.

Assistant coach Ryan Sheridan will also leave the club, with head of youth Gary Chambers placed in interim charge with support from Richard Marshall.

Sunday's reverse was Powell's 50th and final game in charge, with 29 of those games ending in defeat.

His time in charge also included 21 victories, including eight in a row to start this season to propel them into title contention.

Now, though, their spot in the top six is in grave peril - they currently occupy the final play-off spot with a two-point cushion to seventh-placed Salford Red Devils.

Warrington 'need to move in a new direction'

"We’d like to thank Daryl for his commitment and endeavours since joining the club last season but we feel the team now needs a different approach," chairman Stuart Middleton said in confirming Powell's departure.

“Results and performances over the past 18 months have fallen short of the standard we expect and feel the club now needs to move in a new direction.

“We will now begin a thorough process to select a new head coach to take the club forward.

“We still firmly believe this playing group have the ability to compete at the highest level.”
