AS Warrington Wolves search for a permanent successor to Daryl Powell, they have chosen a man with the club at his heart to steady the ship.

Gary Chambers pulled on the primrose and blue jersey as a player more than 200 times and since last year, he has headed up a youth department that has shown some strong results.

Now, he has been confirmed as taking interim charge of the first team and looks set to be in the hot seat for Friday’s visit of Super League leaders Catalans Dragons.

He will be supported by first team assistant coach Richard Marshall, who remains in post after Ryan Sheridan departed alongside Powell.

A tough, no-nonsense prop forward, Chambers made 210 Warrington appearances over two spells at the club – 1989-93 and 1996-2000.

Following his retirement, he spent time as an assistant coach to Darryl van de Velde before heading up the under 19s during Paul Cullen’s tenure.

He remained in and around the coaching picture at The Halliwell Jones Stadium before his only taste of a first-team head coaching role to date at Swinton Lions during 2014, steering them to safety in the second tier.

Chambers returned to Warrington as head of youth last year and now finds himself charged with holding things together at senior level.
