RESEARCH suggests that five million of us have lost our phone at a festival at some point and a similar number (more than four million) have had it stolen.

But what can you do to try and help get your phone returned to you?

Ahead of Creamfields, Better Buy Insurance have put together some top tips after conducting research into the number of lost phones at festivals.

1. Tracker apps are a must

With apps such as Find My iPhone for iOS and Find My Device for Android, GPS makes it easier than ever to keep a track of your phone.

Before heading to Creamfields, be sure to install and activate these apps as they keep track of your phone’s location if stolen or lost.

It’s a good idea to share your details with your friends, who will also be able to track your device.

2. Note down your phone’s details

Each phone has a unique identity number, known as an International Mobile Equipment Identity or IMEI, and this can be found by typing *# 0 6 # into your keypad.

This number is one of the first steps police make to trace a stolen phone back to its owner, so it’s a great thing to have to hand to speed up the process of retrieving your phone.

3. Never leave valuables unattended

You might think that leaving personal items hidden in your tent will be a good way to avoid loss or damage when going around a festival.

However, the survey found that 10% of people had a phone stolen from a tent.

It’s best to keep valuables with you at all times, as sadly not everyone at a festival is there for the music and criminals may look for opportunities when people are away from tents.

4. Consider changing your lock screen

Change your lock screen to a screenshot or note which shows your name, emergency contact number or email address.

This way, it gives you a fighting chance of your phone finding its way back to you if lost.

5. Report lost or stolen items immediately

If you need to report stolen belongings, you should find your nearest security officer or steward, or visit their Lost Property Tent to see if it has been handed in.

Upon returning home, report anything lost or stolen to the police and festival immediately and get a crime number that you can report to your insurance company.

This will cover your back from an insurance perspective and will help stop and reduce the number of crimes taking place at festivals.
