EIGHTIES pop culture meets indulgent American-style desserts with the latest venture by the team behind Café at the End of the Universe.

Andrew Kinsella, his wife Victoria and sister Laura have launched Dark Side of the Spoon at Warrington Market after a successful crowdfunding campaign.

The parlour is upstairs at the market where you can find the likes of ice cream-topped waffles, sundaes, Pop Tart ice cream sandwiches and regular specials.

Menus have been made to look like record sleeves and also look out for Rick Astley and Alice in Wonderland as there is some vivid art on the walls with a Warrington nod exclusively created for the business by Manchester's Paint Sayers.

Andrew, a former Lymm High School student, said: "When we started Café at the End of the Universe we originally wanted to do American style desserts too. That was part of the idea but the unit was too small for that.

"People ask us for desserts all the time and we’ve trialled a couple of things but there was no way to do a full dessert menu downstairs."

So when a unit became available they launched a crowdfunding campaign to test the water with their fans.

That resulted in 71 supporters raising £2,675 towards the project within a fortnight who all now have their name on the wall as a thank you.

Andrew, 38, added: "We knew we had a really good following downstairs and that some people would want to back us and get involved. They got really excited about it."

"We want it to be an extension of what we do already so there’s a bit of a pop culture twist on everything. So instead of normal ice cream we’ve got flavours like ‘Hulk smash’ and ‘rainbow unicorn’.

"We just wanted it to be cool and contemporary and even though we’ve gone for a completely different colour scene it matches our other place. They kind of have the same feel to them.

"The menus are the same in that we’ve tried to keep the puns. A lot of our desserts, waffles and sundaes are based on 80s movies like Ghostbusters, The Goonies, E.T., Beetlejuice and things like that.

"But we also wanted to have a music theme as well which is why we’ve got the American diner music and there’s 50s and 60s playlists and then we’ve got the records on the wall.

"We’re doing a thing where we’ll have a vinyl player and you can bring your own vinyl on certain days."

The favourite dessert so far is The Nutella Professor, a waffle with strawberries, Nutella and Kinder ice cream, and if diners want to have a burger followed by a dessert they can order at either Café at the End of the Universe or Dark Side of the Spoon and have it all brought to their table.

The team are also looking at putting their own twist on afternoon tea.

Andrew said: "Instead of traditional afternoon tea with sandwiches and cakes we’re going to introduce one with mini burgers, corn dogs, halloumi fries, cake pops and chocolate chip scones.

"We posted it online and everybody went crazy. It’s something we’ll be introducing soon and will have to be booked for certain times."

Laura added: "We’ve had so many requests for afternoon teas so considering we’ve not even done that yet I think it will be pretty popular.

"It’s nice that we have a fanbase. So many regulars have come and supported us straight away so it didn’t feel as stressful as when Café at the End of the Universe opened.

Andrew said: "I just want to say to everyone that backed us thank you and make sure you get down to the market to check out Dark Side of the Spoon because we couldn't of done it without you."
