EVEN the most experienced athletes were flabbergasted by the conditions for the Cheshire Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

Competitors of all ages from Warrington Athletics Club as well as adults from other running clubs across the town were knee-deep in mud in places as the event was staged at The Farm Club, Pickmere, for the first time.

There were huge puddles in parts and lots of athletes lost shoes/spikes, which were sucked off in the mud.

To add to that, there was an incredibly steep hill mid-course and rain was torrential during the races too.
