POLICE are 'delighted' with the 12-year sentenced imposed upon a machete attacker who almost cut off his victim's hand.

Jordan Hughes, 22, from Bewsey, was handed the sentence in Liverpool Crown Court yesterday, Wednesday, for the horrific attack on March 7.

He left a 20-year-old in 'agonising pain', needing 12 hours of surgery to reattach his hand, which had almost been amputated outside McDonald's in Winwick Road.

Hughes offered no explanation for the violent assault, which he inflicted in the early hours after seeing the victim with his friends.

Detective constable Joe Davies, from Warrington Police CID, said: “I am delighted with the sentence handed to Hughes.

“His attack on a professional and polite young man was nothing short of barbaric and I will never understand why he chose to violently attack an innocent man who was simply enjoying his evening with friends.

“The victim has thanked officers for their hard work and determination throughout the investigation but I want to commend him for his resolve and character in ensuring justice is done.

“The witnesses have also provided him and the investigation with support and they should feel extremely proud.

“I can only hope Hughes reflects on his actions and the long-term harm they have caused.”

Hughes' victim was taken to Whiston Hospital after the incident and required extensive and complex surgery to his hand, which still does not have full function.

He is in constant pain and described living in 'psychological torture' as a result of his injury.

Following the attack, Hughes posted grusome photographs on Snapchat of himself covered in blood.

David Keane, police and crime commissioner for Cheshire, said: “This must have been a terrifying attack for the victim and greatly concerning for those living nearby.

“The dedication and commitment shown by officers to seek justice for the victim has ensured a dangerous man is no longer in Warrington and our community is a safer place.

“I hope the conclusion of this case provides reassurance to residents and I would like to thank all those involved in the investigation for their efforts.”
