THE rain did not dampen spirits at Victoria Park today, Sunday as hundreds of runners, young and old, took part in Pretty Muddy 2019.

A variation of Cancer Research UK's traditional Race for Life, the 5km obstacle course sees participants getting down and dirty to complete the event with friends and family.

The slightly shorter children's race took place first with plenty of youngsters putting their best foot (and face) forward as they got stuck in the mud for charity.

It was announced that the children taking part raised a phenomenal £13,000.

Three waves of adult races set off throughout the morning and early afternoon.

For the first time this year, men and boys were allowed to take part and we saw plenty of them sporting their best pink outfits around Victoria Park.

They had to tackle various obstacles, all while getting soaked with water and mud by mischievous race marshals.

From crawling under mud soaked nets, jumping into inflatable pools of murky water and bouncing around on space-hoppers to clambering over rock walls and finally shooting down the infamous muddy slide - everyone gave it their all.

One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives and Great Sankey mum Angela Robinson was given the special role of setting off the runners of the first race this year.

Despite overcoming oral cancer in 2012 and now living with bowel cancer, the determined mum-of-one blasted the horn today with her husband Paul and the couple also completed the race.

Their two-year-old son Alex was also there to cheer them on.

Emotions ran high throughout the day as people shared their stories and reasons for taking part in Pretty Muddy this year.

From colleagues to family members and close friends; everyone had a person in mind while running.

Those who took part in the adult 5km race raised an incredible £78,000 for Cancer Research UK.
