I REALISE Chris Vobe is very young and the son of a Labour MP, but his attempt to whip up hatred between the north and south of the town, as he is clearly doing in his letters to the Guardian and Labour leaflets, is unethical as well as unpleasant.

His obsession with the fact that one road in Appleton – Bridge Lane on Cobbs Estate – was resurfaced in the 10 years between 2000 and 2010 is clearly ludicrous.

Does he know how poorly that compares to the other wards in the town?

Labour must have few positive things to say about their record if this is a major plank in their campaign.

Reducing the gap between north and south, rich and poor, old and young, is the Liberal Democrat priority for the town.

The manifesto we wrote before we took control was called One Warrington and it was greeted with a cheer by officers after 23 years of Labour drift.

We have been spending more money in the poorer parts of town but we also believe that every ward needs road repairs.

Labour did nothing to help the poorer parts of town. It suited them to keep people disadvantaged.

They would not even allow council housing to be transferred to a not- for-profit housing association in the 1990s which would have brought in years of extra investment for tenants.

Labour believed it ‘owned’ the estates and the people living there. I was on the housing committee at that time and I remember.

Under Lib Dem leadership the town is thriving as it never did under Labour. Given the chance we will bring the less well off wards up towards the standard of the luckier ones.

Deliberately whipping up hatred between the north and south of the town is not the way to do that.

Think about it Chris, politics should be about trying to make life better for people, not trying to make them hate each other.
