HAVING read the letter from Mr Armstrong, Guardian, June 10, I feel compelled to write regarding my own source of irritation – ignorant and selfish motorists.

Cycling along Winwick Street I was riding past the junction of Buckley Street when a driver decided not to stop but to put his foot down and drive straight across my path. This endangered not just my safety, but his and that of his female passenger.

This is not an isolated incident. Roundabouts are a hotspot for this, particularly on Cromwell Avenue where drivers seem to think that if they see a cyclist approaching it is fair game to cut in front of them. A van driver even did this to me in Warrington Hospital car park. He even leant out of his van window as he drove past laughing!

You aren’t safe at traffic light- controlled junctions either. Motorists seem to be under the impression that an amber light means put your foot down and try to get through as quick as you can. I saw one woman at the junction of Bewsey Road and Lovely Lane begin to turn right even as the lights in the opposite direction had turned to green.

Pedestrians can be equally ignorant and selfish at times by strolling out in front of my bike. Scotland Road where the buses park can be bad for this.

While I appreciate this level of ignorance and selfishness is not on a par with people who queue in shops at the same time as Mr Armstrong, I’m sure most people would agree that the actions of motorists at times beggar belief. While people can be fatally injured by the ignorant and selfish actions of road users, I don’t think too much harm comes to those who have to wait an extra five or 10 minutes for a sandwich.
