I WAS glad to read Mr Allen’s letter last week as it means that the Warriors campaign to highlight the council’s plans to disrupt our pool time and training sessions has worked. If we can reach someone like Mr Allen, who is obviously oblivious to what we as a club are all about and get him to respond, then we have reached more people than we intended to. However, anyone who thinks that the swimmers and parents of Warriors of Warrington expect a ‘free ride’ should check their facts before putting pen to paper. Our swimmers are dedicated children who are working hard to achieve a fantastic goal. They are not intimidating anyone, not drinking themselves into trouble or doing drugs. They are fine members of this community. They are talented young athletes and high achievers in school and not for one minute do they expect any freebies. If all we had to do was ‘save £2 a week’ as Mr Allen suggests we would be smiling. As it is we pay monthly fees to the council for swimmers in the elite training programme and this roughly works out at £50 to £60 a month. Some families pay £150 a month. Our level swimmers not only pay fees to the club but they also pay an entry fee. They are the only children under 16 years of age who pay to swim under the Government’s new swim for free scheme! We are willing to pay our way, we just want to be able to carry on with the training that these kids receive and continue to see brilliant results. I am sure that Mr Allen’s letter has got more of a response from the parents of the club than the council’s budget plans did! SHARON KIRCHIN BROWN Warrington
