WITH reference to Kev Gribben’s letter Car Parking In a Mess (Guardian June 26). As a blue badge holder I would point out that if one is registered with Shopmobility one is given a yellow notice to put in your car window which shows that you have a right to park in the disabled bays.

Having said that, I still find the new system of taking your blue badge to customer services in order to have your parking ticket validated presents difficulties. The reason is that on a number of occasions I have had to put my blue badge in my handbag to take it to customer services.

On returning home I might then leave that bag in the house and next time I go out to shop somewhere else I find I do not have my blue badge with me. If one is then approached by security staff, one is put on the defensive having to explain and, believe me, once given a bit of authority a little power can go the head of some of these staff.

They may eventually accept your explanation, but not before they have put you through humiliation that seems to enhance their feeling of power.

I have even taken my Shopmobility registration card to customer services, which has a photograph on it, proof of identity and proof of qualification to be registered with Shopmobility, but have been told it is not acceptable. Only the blue badge is acceptable.

I think the answer is that even if people do not want to use the scooters issued by shopmobility, a second document with a photograph could be issued, which would be acceptable to customer services. In fact, I cannot see why the Shopmobility registration card is not acceptable. It is proof of one’s eligibility to be registered with Shopmobility, and bears a photograph.

However, until something is done, if you have a Shopmobility yellow leaflet, saying you are eligible to park in a disabled bay, the car park staff will accept that.
