WITH reference to the letter from the Liberal Democrats in the Warrington Guardian (March 29) regarding the parish council election in Walton, we would like to make a number of points in response.

We feel strongly that the democratic process is a key factor and that local people should always have the opportunity to cast a vote; as there were two vacancies co-option may have been challenging.

Also, 10 residents were required to sign the petition for the election process to be instigated.

As there were two vacancies, the Lib Dems had the opportunity to stand two candidates.

In the Stretton Parish Council elections there were two requests for an election to be called – one from the Greens and one other.

If someone is willing to stand and then commit time and energy to supporting residents in resolving issues and advocating for their ward, then surely this is a positive thing to be welcomed.

The Green Party has been actively involved in the campaign to save the green belt in the more rural wards of the town and our place on the parish council will be undertaken with enthusiasm and commitment.

It is unfortunate that the cost of the election needs to be borne by the parish councils.

Perhaps this is something that needs to be taken up by the borough council as we acknowledge that parish council funds are limited.

Most importantly our elected candidate, Steph Davies, is looking forward to being able to serve the residents of Walton.
