I AM writing to reply to your correspondent from last week who said that they were annoyed by the decision of the Green Party not to field a candidate in Warrington South (Warrington Guardian, May 18).

I want to explain how and why the decision was made.

At the last Genera Election, Steph Davies of the Greens got 1,765 votes.

The Tory majority was less than 3,000 votes.

If the Liberal Democrat votes are added to the equation, this would be enough to have stopped David Mowat going to Westminster.

This does not take into account the votes from TUSC and UKIP.

The decision of the Greens not to stand this time around is purely strategic.

It is aimed at preventing a Conservative being elected as Warrington South MP.

The wholesale damage to the environmental and social fabric of the country is at stake, not to mention the future of the NHS.

It is simply too high a price to pay.

The anger that the writer speaks of should be directed to the undemocratic first past the post voting system which delivers a winner takes all scenario.

Proportional Representation would help heal the political process by making the votes of everyone count for something.

Green voters and supporters are welcome to contact us to discuss any issues that they have.
