THANK you David Braithwaite (Warrington Guardian, November 10) for your amusing letter.
However implicit in your descriptions of yourself is that ‘political correctness’ has put you on your back foot as it were.
The way I see it, PC means simply acknowledging who has the power and the privilege and who has not.
Like David I am an over 60 white man and this has given me great privilege.
My children have all been well educated at local schools, I have been well looked after by my dentist and doctors, and all the services work.
In addition when a police car passes me in the street I feel it is there supporting me not treating me with suspicion.
I am, I think, not an object of curiosity or to be avoided, neither do I have to worry where I will sleep tonight or whether I will get something to eat.
With such privilege comes a sense of obligation to my fellow citizens.
I hope that we can retain some sense of consideration for the range of people with whom we share our country despite the upsurge of intolerant, ignorant and course language replacing words of dignity and intelligence that we have to hear and read in the news, particularly from across the Atlantic.
