I AM 100 per cent against the proposed closure of libraries in Warrington.

Lockers are not an adequate substitution for the services currently offered, and it is frankly outrageous to offer them instead of our current library provision. In addition, sure. Instead of ? No way.

Sticking lockers in a disused shop and calling it a library is an insult to the people of Warrington and LiveWire should be ashamed to have made this awful suggestion, let alone acted on it to this extent.

LiveWire seems to be under the impression the Funky Dory lockers will act like the wardrobe in The Chronicles of Narnia, allowing residents access to all manner of delights.

But as an author, parent and reader I feel very strongly that actually these are in effect metal coffins, dealing with the death of our town’s cultural heritage.

Does no-one at LiveWire remember the kicking Warrington took in the media a mere 12 months ago when the Royal Society of Arts placed Warrington at the bottom of its Heritage Index?

There was – rightly – an enormous outcry. But now you’re looking at closing the oldest publicfunded lending library in the country? Seriously? That is utterly ridiculous.

There is a famous Manic Street Preachers song, A Design for Life, which begins with the line ‘libraries gave us power’.

They gave us power, they give us power, they should be allowed to continue to do so.

Do not take this from the people of Warrington, now and in the future.

Don’t do this. It would be truly unforgivable.
