NO doubt Warrington Young Labour (WYL) will enjoy their visit to the European Parliament, (Warrington Guardian, May 12).

Who wouldn’t given this junket is heavily funded by the taxpayer?

The last one arranged by Afzal Khan MEP cost us all around €7,000.

Let us hope that Tom Jennings really does gets his wish that WYL will see how democratic the European Parliament really is.

Somehow I doubt it since these visits are nothing more than a propaganda exercise and a nice little earner for the political groups that organise them.

Debate on the forthcoming EU referendum has focused mostly on economics, trade and immigration.

Importantly though these may be they are dwarfed by the important matter of democracy.

Will it be explained to WYL that the people who propose and draw up legislation are the 28 EU Commissioners?

That these people are unelected by voters and that therein lies the huge democratic deficit.

Will it be explained to WYL that MEPs who we do elect (although how many could name their MEPs) are a fig leaf for democracy.

As far as law making is concerned they are primarily a modifying chamber somewhat akin to the House of Lords.

In a democracy the question that really matters is can you vote for those who legislate for you?

As a member of the EU we don’t vote for the commissioners and can’t throw them out at an election if we don’t like what they do.

That’s all that matters and that is why I’ll be voting to leave in June.
