I READ in this week’s Guardian a small article regarding speeding motorists in Penketh and Great Sankey on Liverpool Road.

It appears the average speed was just over 31mph with one idiot at more than 50mph.

This is not really a true reflection of the speeds that I see nearly every trip on certain roads in Warrington, Liverpool Road being one of them.

The good thing about having speed cameras set up is that it makes the drivers aware they are exceeding the limit and slows them down to the specified limit.

The job of controlling speed is therefore done and that is a good thing.

However nearly every day in Warrington the vast majority of motorists exceed the limit, not by just a few miles an hour but by many miles an hour.

They also seem to be oblivious to red lights and frequently pass through them even though they have been changed for several seconds to red.

In Worcestershire at present, they are trialling a new camera that photographs every car on a certain section of road.

It soon became apparent the same people were speeding at the same times of the day both morning and evening.

After this evidence is supplied to the police, a letter is sent to the offender as a warning.

In nearly 100 per cent of cases the offender has stopped speeding.

Sadly it is not Home Office approved yet so no fines have been issued.

Perhaps in Warrington we should have something similar or averaging cameras on the main arterial roads to reduce speeding under the threat of a fine.

Cameras on traffic light junctions are also an idea before someone is
injured by careless red light jumpers.

It really is a case of if you cannot behave responsibly behind the wheel of a one-tonne machine then you deserve a fine if you ignore the law and rules put there for the safety of yourselves and others.
