EVEN I didn’t understand the quote attributed to me about United Utilities’ charges to schools (Warrington Guardian, October 22).
UU had been quoted as saying charges to dispose of surface water were higher in the north west because we have more rainfall than in the south east, where a similar number of schools pay £16 million less for run-off to drains.
I made the point that costs should be higher for supply where there is less rainfall – but in any case Yorkshire Water, with no less rain than in the north west, charges a primary school £376 whereas a Warrington primary school pays more than £7,000 to take rainwater away.
This just compounds the inequity of Warrington having one of the lowest per-pupil government grants in the land.
