THE people of Warrington will remember in the 1990s how keen Warrington Borough Council was to become a unitary authority under the leadership of then Cllr John Gartside.
The council could not get a decree absolute quick enough for them to be divorced from the rest of Cheshire County Council and run the town how they wanted to and ruin it along the way.
Well now the council has had a change of heart – they do not want to be the outsider anymore.
Cheshire East and Cheshire West has asked central Government for devolution for power to be transferred to the shire councils and guess what?
WBC want a piece of that cake.
They too want a share of the Northern Powerhouse that Cheshire East and West councils are seeking, when for years they didn’t want to know Cheshire councils.
For years I have suggested that the south of Warrington should be put back under control of the Cheshire West council who I believe would provide the services that people in Warrington South rightly deserve.
This is a massive embarrassment and U-turn by WBC who now want to come in from the cold.
If it happens I am sure the people of Warrington will benefit from the devolution of powers thanks to this common sense Conservative Government we now have.
