ACCORDING to your story the regeneration of Bridge Street is to be achieved with the construction of a 10-screen cinema complex.
This should compliment the 10-screen cinemas at Westbrook, Widnes, Runcorn and St Helens.
This appears to be a clichéd plan from a council devoid of original ideas. The first step to addressing the problem is to change the perception that the town centre is populated by hoards of drunken idiots, roaming the streets looking for trouble.
Of course some undesirables visit the town centre at night as they have done for hundreds of years.
However while people feel afraid they will not return to the town centre. I am 54 and visit the town centre at night on a regular basis.
Yet a lot of my friends think I’m mad and wouldn’t visit the town centre after dark. Until we get rid of the fear real, or perceived, nothing will change.
I would love to see a busy, vibrant, diverse town centre but I don’t think another picture house is going to do it.
