I ATTENDED the council meeting last Monday where the go-ahead was given for the 10-screen cinema in the town centre - wonderful news for Warrington!
The leader stressed that this would be a 'major cinema of regional scale and a key attraction' helping to prove that Warrington was leading the north west out of the recession. I agree.
So now is the time when all the arts groups in town require that one of the 10 screen spaces is built to be flexible enough to become a theatre space when required.
This town of nearly a quarter a million people cannot rival Liverpool and Manchester without a theatre.
Most north west towns have one. We are not asking for a theatre instead of a cinema, as some of your correspondents fear.
We are asking for both at a fraction of what a purpose built theatre would cost.
There would be all the advantages of the surrounding development – including restaurants and parking – which could attract professional companies as well.
Imagine the kudos the cinema operator could claim – the first arts, culture, leisure facility this century!
Come on artists, dancers, actors, musicians - make your voices heard now.
Yours sincerely,
Celia Jordan
