IT was great to read in the Guardian, February 26, that more than 250 local businesses, led by the Chamber of Commerce and the University of Chester, are backing the council’s cross-party campaign for road tolls on the Mersey bridges at Runcorn to be scrapped totally for Warrington residents.

These firms join more than 400 residents who have now signed the online petition against the tolls launched by Great Sankey resident Nick Bent, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Warrington South.

Readers can add their voice to the petition at WarringtonSouth.org.

Sadly, one voice that has not been heard much on this important issue is the local Tory MP.

Nick Bent has revealed that the Tory MP for Warrington South has not raised the road tolls issue in Parliament for more than two years now.

Perhaps the sitting Tory MP’s lack of concern may be down to the fact that he has moved out of Warrington to Macclesfield.

This serious failure by the Tory MP makes it even more important that the voices of Warrington residents and businesses are heard loud and clear by Government ministers.

Together we can force them to make a U-turn and scrap these tolls completely.

Please take two minutes to sign the petition.
