I HAVE worked with the youth of Warrington for many years.

I have trained them in the game of football, taken the underprivileged on camping holidays and found work for the young offenders.

So I am very pleased indeed to read that Mr Smith’s club may be turned into a place for activities for the youth of Warrington.

My concerns now are for the elderly of Warrington. For a long time now I have been in consultation with the local council and the government concerning a community centre for the elderly in the centre of town.

I have not been in the building since it was known as the Ritz Cinema. It looks very large from the outside and I do not know what plans have been made and whether all the space is required for the youth activities, or if it would be possible to combine both elderly and youth in the same facility.

I can see no reason why the young and elderly cannot get along together, providing there is sufficient space for both group’s activities.

Such a centre may encourage the elderly to use the town at night, with the correct transport arrangements.
