YOUR correspondent A Edwards (Opinion, September 11) reckons you’ve saved council tax under the coalition.

But there were also two letters about overgrown grass, so if you like your supposed tax cuts, just don’t expect the same public services.

Labour got interest rates down in the first place, and don’t forget the coalition’s nearly 300 tax rises – including that whopping 14 per cent increase in the rate of VAT (from 17.5 to 20 per cent).

The tax take figures tell it plainly.

The last year Labour was in power, £513 billion was paid in taxes.

By 2015-16, the Government plans to increase that amount to £671 billion, in real terms a rise of 15 per cent.
