THE campaign to move the cenotaph from near Bridge Foot misses the point.

It was deliberately placed at a busy entry point to the town to serve as a visible commemoration of the sacrifice made by people from the town in the Great War.

Think of all the cenotaphs and war memorials at village crossroads throughout the country.

Think of the Stockton Heath and Walton war memorials at crossroads just over the Manchester Ship Canal and the one outside Crosfields.

The Cenotaph in London is in the middle of a road.

A cenotaph is not a gravestone and the area around it is not a cemetery. There are soldiers’ graves in Manchester Road cemetery and maybe additional plaques could be placed there, but leave the cenotaph and other war memorials where they are.

Moving it to a park or quiet place is to hide it away, where it will be forgotten and attract graffiti.

Some people cannot remember whether Col O’Leary is on a horse or not on the Boer War memorial in Queen’s Gardens.
