WHEN Warrington Wolves take to the field in St Helens on Sunday, they will do so looking to extend a record that stretches back more than 90 years.
Huddersfield Giants stand between The Wire and a first visit to Wembley Stadium since they last won the competition in 2019, with the two set to face off in the semi-finals at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
Warrington boast an excellent Challenge Cup record against Huddersfield having won 12 of the 14 ties the two have played in the competition.
Indeed, the men from Fartown have not beaten The Wire in a Challenge Cup tie since winning the 1933 final 21-17 at Wembley, with the other Huddersfield win also coming in a final - 9-5 at Headingley in 1913.
All nine of the cup ties between the two sides since 1933 have ended in Warrington wins, the most memorable of which came in the 2009 Wembley final to end a 35-year trophy drought.
Their Challenge Cup history includes just one previous semi-final meeting, with Wire beating the Giants 33-6 at Salford on their way to lifting the trophy for the third time in four years in 2012.
The two sides last met in this competition back in 2013, with Warrington running out 44-24 winners at The Halliwell Jones Stadium in the quarter-finals.
Sunday will be the 42nd time (including replays) that Warrington have featured in a Challenge Cup semi final.
And victory would balance out their record, which currently stands at 19 victories, 20 defeats and two draws.
Two of those semi-final ties were played at the Totally Wicked Stadium, with Wire ending up on the losing side in both.
They were beaten 22-20 by a Salford Red Devils side coached by current Giants boss Ian Watson behind closed doors during the Covid pandemic in October 2020 while they also lost 24-16 to Leeds at Saints’ home ground in 2014.
