WARRINGTON Wolves have fielded enquiries about Josh Drinkwater’s availability in recent days.

However, it appears as though he will remain as part of Sam Burgess’ squad for the foreseeable future.

The Warrington Guardian understands at least one Super League club has made contact with The Wire about a potential loan move for the 31-year-old half-back, who has not featured since the Round Three victory over Castleford Tigers.

He limped out of that game with a thigh injury which then kept him out for the ensuing weeks. He is now fit and available for selection, but the form of homegrown half-back Leon Hayes alongside England captain George Williams means he currently finds himself on the outer.

However, it is understood said enquiries have been knocked back – Warrington are said to be keen to keep Drinkwater at the club for the time being with head coach Burgess having openly expressed his admiration for the experience and leadership the scrum-half provides even while not in the side.

The Australian is off-contract at the end of the current season and, as things stand, he will be free to talk to rival clubs about a move for 2025 and beyond from May 1.

Since joining The Wire from Catalans Dragons ahead of last season, Drinkwater has made 31 appearances for the club, scoring two tries.

He has made more than 200 appearances in the English game having also turned out for London, Leigh and Hull KR.
