THE wonderful world of Man of Steel voting reared its head again on Monday night, with two players in particular feeling generous towards Wolves players.
Joe Philbin was the surprise choice of Catalans Dragons forward Jason Baitieri for Super League’s top individual award, which was won by Castleford scrum-half Luke Gale.
Every Super League player was asked to vote for three players and rank them in order, with first place getting five points, three for second and one for third.
Baitieri picked Philbin as his first choice, while Wire winger Matty Russell also received five points from former teammate Gene Ormsby.
Ex-Wolves wideman Ormsby also picked Daryl Clark as his second choice, while Huddersfield teammate Jake Mamo gave a similar honour to Kurt Gidley.
Ryan Atkins, who recently won Wolves’ player of the year award, did not receive a single vote from his peers.
HOW DID THE WOLVES PLAYERS VOTE?
IF only votes from Warrington players counted, the Man of Steel award would have been shared.
Gale and St Helens hooker James Roby both received 58 points from the Wolves squad, with Zak Hardaker picking up 30.
Castleford’s Ben Roberts and Greg Eden, 16 and 12 respectively, were the next most popular choices among the Wolves squad.
Eleven Wire players picked Gale as their top choice, with 9 picking Roby.
Interestingly, none of the Wolves players gave any votes to Hull FC’s Albert Kelly, who made the three-man shortlist.
