WOLVES star Ben Currie says he is determined to bounce back from the injury that ended a season he calls his best yet.

The 22-year-old injured his left knee in the act of scoring his 21st try of the season in the 35-28 defeat to Wigan on September 16.

Scans showed a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament on which he had an operation last week, with an expected recovery period of up to nine months.

As well as missing Wolves’ crucial run-in to the end of the season and England’s Four Nations campaign, he will miss a chunk of the 2017 campaign but the second rower is adamant he will return stronger.

“I’ve had my operation and I’m in the best possible hands here,” he said.

“The physio here has helped players with this exact injury before so he knows what it’s like and how best to handle the recovery.

“I’ll buckle down now with my rehab but I’m already desperate to get back playing. Age is on my side, I’ve got many years to come so I’m confident I’ll come back flying.”

Currie, who represented Ireland in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup, was forced to watch from home as his teammates fell to defeat in Saturday’s Grand Final.

The news of Currie’s long-term absence came just before he was named in the Super League Dream Team for the first time.

He was chosen in the second row of the league’s select 13 alongside Hull FC’s Mark Minichiello after leading the Wolves try charts for a second season in a row.

He says the news of his selection came at a good time to give him a boost ahead of his recovery.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling, to be picked as one of the 13 players to stand out in the league and as the best in your position is a great achievement,” he said.

“The season hasn’t finished the way I wanted it to with my injury but it’s a nice pick-me-up.

“I feel like I’ve performed well this season and it’s great to have that recognised. It’s boosted my confidence for sure, it will help to drive me onto recovering as best I can so I can be sat here next season as well.

“It’s my fifth season of first grade rugby and I’ve been improving every year. It’s definitely my best year so far, both personally and as a team, but I still think there’s a lot more to come from me.”
