A CHANCE for Warrington Wolves to host NRL giants Brisbane Broncos in the 2017 World Club Series would please owner Simon Moran.

Champions of the two hemispheres, Wigan Warriors and Cronulla Sharks, are set to contest the World Club Challenge in the UK.

For the past two editions, a series has been built around the main contest and chiefs of The Wire and Brisbane have both declared their wish to feature next February.

Wolves, who similarly hosted St George Illawarra Dragons in 2014, secured their invite to any such series in 2017 by winning the League Leaders’ Shield, while Brisbane ended the NRL campaign in fifth spot.

It was unclear at the time of going to press whether minor premiers and Grand Final runners-up Melbourne Storm, or any other NRL outfit, are in the running to take part in what has previously been a six-team contest.

“We’re waiting for clarification but we’re keen to take part,” said Moran.

“It’s a bit out of our hands at the moment.

“We’re optimistic we’ll be playing a game in it.

“If we were to play Brisbane then it would be a fantastic game.

“They are one of the great iconic clubs of world rugby league so I’d be happy if we can play them at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.”

Moran, meanwhile, paid tribute to the club’s supporters after their backing in a table-topping season that ultimately ended up in disappointment with Saturday’s loss to Wigan.

“I’d like to thank all the fans,” said Moran.

“They did brilliant at Old Trafford, Wembley and throughout the season.

“I believe you have to look at it objectively.

“There’s 12 teams, three competitions. We won one, and we were still fighting to win the other two with a minute of each game being left.

“We’re dealing with fine margins. Obviously we’d hoped the fine margins were on our side but they weren’t, so inevitably it’s disappointment.

“But you’ve got to be objective about it. I’m a fan too, we’d like to improve. Taking stock, it’s a vast improvement on the two seasons before.”
