TEENAGER Morgan Smith is in contention for his Super League debut this weekend after impressing in the Challenge Cup win at Oldham.

The 18-year-old replaced Daryl Clark at hooker in the game at Bower Fold, putting in a lively and industrious performance that he capped off with a try late on.

When asked if his performance had put the youngster in the reckoning for Sunday’s return to league action against Wakefield, first-team coach Richard Agar said he has done his prospects 'no harm at all.'

“It’s a possibility. With Brad Dwyer and Chris Sandow still out we are a little bit light in the pivots,” he said.

“Daryl is capable of playing long game time and we’ve got Stefan Ratchford who can play in multiple positions, but I think Morgan did himself no harm at all.

“If the opportunity or a situation arose where we think we may have to put him in, we would certainly select him with every confidence.”

Smith was not the only youngster to impress at the weekend, with George King also grabbing a hat-trick of tries in the second half.

Agar was pleased with their performances, and says it can only increase competition for places within the squad.

“It was great that we were able to continue our momentum with so many young players coming in,” he said.

“Morgan Smith got out there and we were really impressed with his first run, Sam Wilde and Joe Philbin got plenty of game time, Benjamin Jullien continued in the side, George King played long game time and obviously scored his hat-trick.

“I was talking to Gene Ormsby this morning and he’s not really done too much wrong but the form of the guys in his position has kept him out of the side.

“Timing for these guys is all-important, but we knew all along that competition for places drives up performances within the group.”
