TEENAGE Wolves prospect Morgan Smith’s Super League bow “could be soon” after his impressive debut in the Challenge Cup win over Oldham.

The 18-year-old came on at hooker in the second half and put in an industrious performance which included a try at Bower Fold.

Wolves head coach Tony Smith was impressed with his young star’s performance and said he was keen to get him into Super League.

“I thought he was very good when he came on at hooker, he’s put his hand up to play some Super League now I think,” he said.

“He scored a try, showed a lot of determination and nearly scored a couple more but he showed that he’s ready for it, we’ll get him a test at the right stage.

“That may come soon, we knew he was a talented young player.”

“George King as well, three tries from the front row, he certainly caught my eye and hopefully a few others were impressed with him too.”

Wolves named their strongest possible side against Scott Naylor’s Championship outfit and, after a nightmare start which saw them concede the opening try, Smith’s side regained their composure to eventually run out comfortable winners.

Class told in the end and Smith was able to give the likes of Chris Hill, Ashton Sims and Daryl Clark extended rests ahead of the return to Super League action away at Wakefield on Sunday.

“There wasn’t a great deal of choice I had about the team selection in terms of numbers, 18 and 19 (Dan Murray and Joe Ryan) were part-time reserve-grade players so we’re down to it,” Smith said.

“We’ve got to try and get into positions in games where we can afford to give players rests rather than flog them each and every week like we have been doing.

“Until we get some of those players back, we’ve got to play guys who have knocks and probably should have a week off, that’s when they end up getting another injury.

“We’re looking at getting a few more bodies back in the next few weeks and we’ll have some decisions to make then.”

One of the players to come into the side was winger Gene Ormsby, who marked his first Wolves appearance of the season with two tries.

The 23-year-old flyer has just returned to the club from a loan spell at Huddersfield and Smith says he is “reluctant” to send him out on loan again.

“The loan was good for him but he’s back at the moment and we’re down on bodies but I thought his hand up on the whole today to try and get a position for next week,” he said.

“We’ll decide in the next 24-48 hours where his next game is but it probably won’t be back on loan.

“He did well today and I’m really pleased for him, he’s had a great attitude.

“I’ve got to work out whether he’s in the team for next week or not but I’d be reluctant to send him out anywhere at the moment.”
