TONY Smith is confident silverware is around the corner after signing an extended contract with Warrington Wolves.

Head of coaching and rugby Smith has tied himself to the club until the end of November 2018, ending speculation that his seven-year stay with the club was coming to an end.

Smith, the current longest serving coach in Super League having joined Wolves in 2009, said he is excited to be a part of what could be some of the best times in the club’s history.

“I’m delighted and excited about the upcoming two years,” he said.

“I think some of our best times are to come and hopefully some of that will be this year; certainly into the next couple and beyond. I’m excited to be part of it.”

Smith led Wolves to Challenge Cup glory in his first year in charge and added further Wembley triumphs in 2010 and 2012.

Wolves have also won the League Leader’s Shield (2011) and made the first two Grand Final appearances (2012 and 2013) under the Australian’s charge.

The past two seasons, which have both included Challenge Cup semi-final defeats, have been a period of transition after losing the services of experienced talents like Lee Briers, Adrian Morley, Brett Hodgson, Michael Monaghan and Trent Waterhouse.

Being crowned champions for the first time since 1955 remains the holy grail and Smith believes glory is closer than ever.

“I think we have been a good fit for each other as coach and club, and it’s the ambition of this club that has kept me here,” he said.

“I think we have come through a period of rebuild over the last couple of years and we’ve got some terrific young players with experience now.”

The former Huddersfield Giants, Leeds Rhinos and England coach clearly wants to be around to see the fruits of the labour both on and off the field.

He said: “We are making some really big inroads off the field as well as on it now too.

“We are engaging with our fans and I think that’s a real positive and makes us a much stronger club.

“I am enjoying being part of watching this grow and it’s important for us to keep developing.

“We’ve been ambitious for a long time but are now getting our act together in many respects so it’s a good place to be.”
