THE Warrington Wolves players know the performance in Friday night’s defeat at Huddersfield Giants was “not good enough”, said forward Joe Westerman.

Table-topping Wire fell to a surprise 11-0 defeat to the struggling Giants and face the tough prospect of a trip to arch-rivals Widnes Vikings tomorrow, Friday, kick off 8pm.

Vikings will be looking to inflict a third consecutive defeat on Wolves, but Westerman is reading a different script.

“It’s a derby game with a big crowd, everyone will be buzzing and there’s no better way of getting back on the horse than winning a ‘derby’,” he said.

“We’ve been really good in previous weeks and have scored plenty of points so we know that, as a team, Huddersfield wasn’t good enough and we all accepted that.

“We sat down after and we knew what to work on this week. We started on Sunday and have had a couple of big days to crack on with putting it right.

“They’ve lost a few games as well but they’ve got a lot of players back. We’re itching to get back to how we were and if we carry out what we’ve been doing in practice we will do.”

Tries from Aaron Murphy and Leroy Cudjoe, as well as a penalty and drop-goal from Danny Brough, sealed what was only the Giants’ second win of the season on a wet night in West Yorkshire.

Wolves were missing 10 men, including influential half back Chris Sandow and dropped winger Tom Lineham from their line-up, but Westerman says that was not too big a factor in the defeat.

“Missing players is a bit of a factor but the players that stepped in are more than good enough to make us a winning side,” he said.

“I thought at the time that Huddersfield played the weather better, Danny Brough pretty much kicked us to death so it was a tough one for us.

“We knew pretty much what was going to happen, we’d practised all week but we didn’t put it into practice so we’re all very disappointed.

“The defence was really good but it has been pretty good all year, apart from a couple of games where it’s been slack, and we need to keep that going this week as well as sorting the attack out.”

Westerman, who spent some time at prop and in the halves at Huddersfield, is a new addition to the Wolves squad having joined from Hull FC in the close season and says settling in has been very easy but has told the Wire faithful to expect a lot more from him as the season progresses.

“When I first got here everyone took me in pretty much straight away and it made it much easier to get settled,” he said.

“I’ve still got a lot to work on and I am doing that, there’s things that I’ve been doing that are a bit different to how I used to play but I’m adapting to it and it helps the team.

“I feel that I can get better and I’m looking forward to stepping up and showing everyone what I really can do.

“I feel like I’m part of the furniture now and ready to get us back to winning ways again.”

Tony Smith has made one change to Wolves’ 19-man squad, with Jordan Cox replacing Joe Philbin.

That means Lineham is included, though Smith has said this week he may spend more time in the Reserves or on dual registration with Rochdale to find some form.
