PAUL Wood has left Warrington Wolves.

The prop, who was Wolves' longest-serving player, has had his request to be released from the club accepted.

Warrington Wolves today confirmed the club has accepted Wood’s request to be released from his current contract.

The former England international has signed for Championship club Featherstone Rovers.

Wood holds Warrington heritage number 999 having made his debut back in 2000.

He leaves the club having made 339 appearances for the primrose and blue, crossing for 50 tries in that time.

He started his Warrington career at Wilderspool and has been part of many changes at the club, significantly the move over to The Halliwell Jones Stadium and the team’s rise within the game now competing in Challenge Cup and Super League Grand Finals.

Head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith said: “I’d like to thank Paul for his contribution to the club. He's provided 15 years of great service.

"Paul expressed a desire for a new challenge and this request was granted. Competition for places is tough and we need people ready for that challenge.

"There is an exciting time ahead with the new staff, players and improvement of training facilities, therefore we require everyone to be 100% committed to the Warrington cause.

"We wish Paul and his family all the best for the future.”

Other player movement ahead of the new campaign has seen hooker Andy Ackers brought in on a month’s loan from Swinton Lions.

He will start a four-week trial with immediate effect. Ackers has previously been part of the Warrington system with the club’s academy before signing for Swinton for the 2014 season.
