A BLISTERING first-half display allowed Warrington Wolves’ academy side to kick their new season off with a home victory.

And while pleased with what his side showed before half time against Hull FC, head of youth Ryan O’Brien insists lessons must be learnt from a second half he described as “really disappointing.”

The Wire’s purple patch of six tries in 25 minutes saw the game effectively ended as a contest by the break, with the hosts striding into a 32-0 lead in front of a delighted Friday evening crowd at Victoria Park.

Arron Lindop, who made a try-scoring first-team debut against Catalans Dragons in Round One, got the ball rolling while winger Frank Sergent touched down for a double before the interval.

Tom McKinney, Harrison Rigby and Lachlan Webster also touched down in the first half as Wire looked set for a dominant scoreline.

However, the visitors fought back after the break with four tries of their own, although they never got to within striking distance of the score Warrington had run up.

The hosts rounded off the scoring in the final minute through hooker Lewis Barratt to wrap up a 38-16 victory.

Despite the scoreline, however, O’Brien wants to make sure his players learn from what happened after the break.

If they do, he expressed faith that the experience was benefit them going forward.

“It really was a game of two halves,” he said.

“We touched the ball once in the first seven minutes or so and did well to weather an early storm from Hull.

“We then hit a real purple patch, completing 23 sets on the bounce and generating some momentum with direct and fast attack.

“This put us in some great positions to get points on the board.

“The second half was really disappointing – we made some careless errors and poor decisions, gave too many penalties away and didn’t gain any control of the ruck whatsoever.

“Fatigue kicked in and we found ourselves in a negative spiral throughout the rest of the half.

“Credit must go to Hull though - they showed a lot of character to respond and convincingly win the second half.

“There are plenty of lessons in that game for our boys that I’m confident will stand us in good stead for the rest of the season.”

The next academy fixture for The Wire is a trip to Bradford Bulls on Thursday, March 28.
