THE new-look Warrington Wolves made an impressive start to their Challenge Cup campaign with a 52-4 win over the Bradford Bulls at Odsal Stadium.

Anna Dennis, Grace Burnett, Nicole Barnett and Lauren Ellison all scored debut tries as head coach Armani Sharrock took charge of her first game.

Sharrock picked seven debutants in her 17-strong matchday squad, and her youngsters did not let her down.

In a scrappy game littered with errors and stoppages for injury, The Wire rarely looked troubled and would have been disappointed to have conceded the Bulls’ only try of the game just before half time.

It was stalwart Sammi Simpson who opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute, the winger turned second rower revelling in her new role alongside skipper Katie May Williams and forging what looks to be an exciting understanding with barnstorming prop Grace Burnett.

Burnett made inroads into the Bulls defence throughout the game, taking on the role of ball carrier after fellow prop Abi Latchford was forced off with an injury in the opening minutes.

In fact, there were strong performances across the park, with Dani Bound scoring two first-half tries either side of a deserved effort from Burnett to take the game away from the hosts.

And it was the impressive Burnett again who broke through the Bulls’ defence to hand on to Simpson for her second as Warrington took full control of the tie on the half-hour.

Teenage centre Barnett went over in the dying seconds of the half to compound the misery for the Bulls, who were finding it hard to compete with their Super League visitors.

The second half saw young full-back Dennis stamp her authority on the game, bringing the ball back well with some strong runs and producing an inch perfect pass that allowed winger Abi Johnstone to cross for her second try in the dying minutes of the game.

Dennis herself had scored a deserved debut try on 70 minutes and there were other second half scores from Ellison and Georgia Westwood to seal what was a comfortable win for The Wire.
