WARRINGTON Wolves got off the mark for the 2024 Super League season in a game marred by controversy.

The Wire ran out 36-10 winners over Hull FC, but that barely begins to tell the story of the contest.

With the score at 6-6 and with half time approaching, a seemingly innocuous clash of heads between Ben Currie and Nu Brown saw the Hull man shown a red card to the bewilderment of all in attendance.

Before then, Lewis Martin’s try in the corner had cancelled out an early opener from Wire’s captain for the night Danny Walker as a depleted visiting side battled well.

Wire were then awarded a penalty try in the early stages of the second half as Matty Ashton was hit high by Tex Hoy as he went for the corner, but Jack Walker’s score reminded everyone that Hull were not about to go quietly.

However, Wire then hit a purple patch and tries from home debutant Sam Powell and Toby King stretched them comfortably clear.

Powell was later sin-binned for a high tackle, but there was no further damage during his time off the field and James Harrison and Connor Wrench put late gloss on the scoreline.
