DARYL Clark says Warrington Wolves simply left themselves with too much to do with 12 men in Friday night’s defeat at Hull FC.

The Wire were 10-0 down at the break and, once Declan Patton had been sent off for a high tackle on home winger Bureta Faraimo, Hull stretched their lead to 18 points.

Jack Hughes and Ryan Atkins scored in quick succession as Wolves briefly threatened a comeback, but the Black and Whites closed out a 21-12 victory.

While saying the spirit shown after Patton’s dismissal was “pleasing,” Clark says a first-half display riddled with poor discipline meant the damage was already done.

“I think the penalty count was 6-1 at half-time. If we’re giving that many penalties away, we're always going to struggle,” he said.

“We’re not happy with the performance, but to give ourselves a chance after going down to 12 was pleasing.

“There was only 10 points in it at half-time so we thought we had a chance to get ourselves back in it, but the sending-off obviously made that a lot more difficult.

“We showed some good character to give ourselves a chance. We played off the cuff and had a dig.

“We just thought to ourselves that we had nothing to lose and to throw the ball around a little bit.

“We knew we had to keep hold of the ball as well as we didn’t want to be defending with a man down.

“If we’d have done that from the start, it might have been a different story.”

Clark also says teammate Patton can have few arguments about referee Ben Thaler’s decision to send him off.

“I didn’t think there was much in it at first, but when you see it on the screen it looks bad,” he said.

“He’s hit him from behind and knocked him out. I don’t think we can really argue with it.”

The game was played in freezing conditions, with temperatures dipping well below freezing throughout the game.

However, the hooker said adjusting to such cold weather did not take as long as he expected it to.

“We were all a bit stiff during warm-up and at the start of the game,” he said.

“It took us a while to get moving but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be.

“If anything, the ball was dryer so it helped to keep hold of it. It was difficult when your fingers were numb though!”
