BEN Westwood has signed a new one-year contract with Warrington Wolves, the club have confirmed.

The 36-year-old, who recently played his 400th game for The Wire, will play on next season in what will be his 17th campaign with the club.

Westwood was out of contract at the end of the season but says he is not ready for retirement yet.

“I’m just pleased to get it over the line,” he said.

“We have been talking about it for a few months but I wanted to wait until I was back playing to get it signed.

“I’m not ready for retirement just yet and I couldn’t see myself playing anywhere else.

“I always felt I could carry on for another year and I’m just happy Warrington felt the same.”

Wolves head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith has also welcomed news of Westwood’s new deal, saying he has “matured” in several ways.

“He’s played such a big part in the club for so long, on and off the field,” he said.

“What you see is what you get with Bennie on the field, but off it he’s developed and matured. He represents the club well.

“His role is changing as a player but he’s still finding a role for himself in the team and doing a good job.”
