TONY Smith has confirmed Ben Currie's role in his comeback game for Warrington Wolves against Wigan Warriors tomorrow.

Currie, absent since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in the home Super 8s defeat to Wigan last September, will be on the bench as he looks to return to the form that made him one of Super League's brightest young talents with an England international future.

“It’s fantastic to have him back," said Smith after today's captain's run, the final training session prior to a game which could determine Wolves' fate for a Super 8s or Middle 8s finale to the season.

"He’s been ripping it up in training and he’s stayed on course. It’s one of those injuries where you can’t bring him back early, it needs a set period of time to heal.

“He’s done everything asked of him and he’s come back at the exact time that is required.

“The only thing with that type of injury is if you don’t do everything right you can come back later, not earlier. But the fact he’s kept himself on course right from the start is testimony to his professionalism and also his attitude.

“He’s been brilliant all the way through. It’s been great just having him back in training because he’s really enthusiastic and energetic. He feels like a debutant again I think.

“It pretty much feels like a new signing for some of the players because it’s been a long time without him.

“You certainly miss a player of his calibre, that’s for sure.”

There will likely be a need to manage Currie's game time as the 22-year-old back rower finds his feet again after his first serious injury in the sport.

“We’ll have to play it by ear," said Smith.

"He’s a fit young guy who has worked really hard.

"He’s not going to have match fitness but we’re willing to play him for whatever period of time he can play well at.

"If he blows up a little bit earlier than he normally would then that’s to be expected and we’ll take him off.

“He’ll come off the bench.”
