COULD Danny McGuire be on his way to Warrington Wolves?

The Wire are known to be seeking a replacement for the retiring Kurt Gidley, and experienced top-level half backs that are available are few and far between.

But the 34-year-old Leeds Rhinos captain has just announced this will be his final year at Headingley and notice of his future is now awaited.

However, he has a history with Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith from when the early days of his career first blossomed at Leeds.

And McGuire has been in inspirational form for a rejuvenated Leeds side this year following their journey through the Middle 8s last season.

That experience could be something Smith would desire at The Halliwell Jones Stadium in 2018, should the expected happen and Wolves themselves follow the same fall from grace into the Middle 8s this year.

Former England and Great Britain international McGuire was contracted with Rhinos until the end of the 2018 season, so it is clear he had the intention of playing at least one more season.

Having been at Leeds all of his career, winning all trophies available, he is the leading try scorer of all time in summer era with 233 Super League tries so far in his career.

In total he has scored 262 tries for the club in more than 400 games.

McGuire said: “When I was a youngster coming through the academy, I got my opportunity because a senior player moved on and now is the right time for me and the club to give our talented, young players their opportunity.

“I have been at my club since I was 12 and spent my entire adult life so far here; it is all I have ever known. But there are exciting challenges ahead and I know that the door is always open for me here at Headingley.

“I would like to thank Gary Hetherington (chief executive) and Brian McDermott (head coach) for giving me the opportunity to decide my next action.

“I will take time now to look at my options moving forward. I am in no rush to make definite plans about next season and beyond.

“I am not ready to say my goodbyes just yet, we are currently second in the league and in the Challenge Cup semi-final and that is where my attention is focused now.”
