NEW signing Kevin Brown is joining Warrington Wolves “at the peak of his powers”, Wire icon Lee Briers says.

The England international joined Wolves from neighbours Widnes last week and has penned a two-year deal at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Briers, who is the club’s assistant first team coach, can see parallels to himself within Brown and outlined just why he thinks Wolves will see the best of the 32-year-old.

“I’m a big believer that, in terms of half-backs, you can be as good and as naturally talented as you want but it isn’t until the latter stages of your career that you understand the game fully,” he said.

“You play off the cuff most of the time and I think we have got Kevin at the peak of his powers.

“He’s 32 years of age, knows the game inside out and we’re going to reap the benefits of that.”

The former Wales international half-back, who played 423 games in primrose and blue before retiring in 2013, believes Brown’s new teammates will bring out the best in him, including fellow half-back Kurt Gidley.

“No disrespect to any of the other teams he’s played for, but he hasn’t played with Ryan Atkins, Ben Currie, Andre Savelio and the like,” he said.

“He hasn’t played with that calibre of player and I think that will improve him as a player.

“Kevin’s been with us for two days but it feels like he’s been with us for two years. Ball-players who understand the game can fit into any team and that’s what we’ve got with Kev.

“We see Kevin and Kurt as being a fantastic combination. They are different kinds of players but are very experienced, will take us around the park and will compliment each other.”

Brown’s arrival comes in the wake of Chris Sandow’s departure from the club and Briers says Wolves have done well to recruit someone of the former Wigan and Huddersfield man’s quality.

“Numerous names came up and Kevin’s was one of those that came up initially,” he said.

“We all agreed he would fit within the way we like to play and also meet our standards off the field.

“When Chris left, it put us in a tricky situation but I’m glad we are sat here talking about Kevin Brown being in our squad.”
