LYMM High School senior rugby union team lifted the Cheshire Cup on Sunday.

They defeated Stockport Grammar 22-12 at the AJ Bell Stadium in Salford.

Lymm were only behind once in the final, which was a curtain-raiser to Sale Sharks’ European Rugby Champions Cup loss to Saracens.

They trailed 5-3 at the 30-minute mark but once they got their noses back in front the Lymm boys never looked back.

Tries from Sale Sharks academy players Joe Murphy and Callum Grieve were added to by a cracking effort from Callum Morris to seal Lymm’s success.

Lymm High School, whose previous students in the Sharks ranks include Ross Harrison, James Mitchell and Mark Jennings, took a 3-0 lead through the boot of Josh Davies from a penalty attempt in front of the sticks.

They went close to going in front a little earlier when James Pitcher got over the try line, only to be held up by some stout defending.

Stockport began to grow into the game and took the lead through an excellent Tom Travis score in the corner.

Lymm, who reached the decider courtesy of an 11-8 win against holders Wilmslow High School, responded through Joe Murphy.

The second-row forward danced his way to the try line, with Davies improving for 10-5 at the interval.

Scrum-half Callum Morris stretched out for Lymm’s second try and again Davies potted the extras.

While James Sherlock was in the sin-bin, Lymm increased their advantage courtesy of Callum Grieve’s brilliant solo effort from 60 metres.

After Sherlock received a second yellow card, and was subsequently sent off, Stockport reduced the deficit but Lymm saw out the closing stages to seal victory.
