Altrincham Kersal 25 Warrington 49

WARRINGTON rediscovered the attacking verve they showed earlier in the season as they beat Altrincham Kersal in a highly entertaining encounter.

The visitors ran in six tries to record their third consecutive win and keep them in fourth place in the North One West table.

They started brightly and tries from Nathan Beasley and Jon Ward, both converted by Ben Hockenhull who also added a penalty, gave them a 17-0 lead before the hosts hit back with a try of their own in the left corner just before half time.

Another Hockenhull penalty stretched the lead before Beasley grabbed his second try after an excellent break from Max Caldwell.

Max Walker then charged over after a quick tap penalty by Tom Wood before the hosts responded with a pushover try to give them a glimmer of hope.

However, Walker barged over for his second score after constant pressure on the Altrincham line to make the score 42-18 and the game looked beyond the hosts.

Another pushover try gave Altrincham some life but the hosts had the final say when Walker brushed off a defender to stroll over to complete his hat-trick and round off an impressive win.

Warrington complete the season on Saturday at home to third-placed Wilmslow.

“Our back line was awesome in attack today,” said coach Andy Roberts.

“But credit should also be given to the pack, with especially outstanding performances from Joe Wilson, Josh Riley, Sean Callendar and Paul Thompson, who rolled back the years with some defence-splitting running.

"We play our last game of the season on Saturday. This should be a home match but, unfortunately, because of matters beyond our control, we have to travel to Sandbach to face Wilmslow.

"Currently, Wilmslow lie third in the league and we are fourth so it should be a cracking game and hopefully some of our supporters will make the 30 mile trek to south Cheshire to cheer us on.”

WARRINGTON’S second string thrashed their counterparts from Altrincham in a seven-try demolition.

Nick Grimshaw showed his blistering pace to cross for a converted try, with Kevin Hughes and Craig Byre chipping in before Grimshaw's second.

Before Grimsha completed his hat-trick in the second half, Sean Yoxhall and Glenn Heson touched down.

“We played champagne rugby today,” said captain Ben Hart.

“Hopefully, we can maintain these standards for our final fixture against Wilmslow this Saturday."

A SUPERB comeback saw Warrington edge an excellent win over league leaders Whitchurch.

Two tries for the visitors after Matt Rockey’s opening penalty seemingly put them in control, but another Rockey penalty narrowed the gap before John McGill’s converted try won it for the hosts.

“A superb result, which spoke a lot about the spirit and character of the side,” enthused coach Lee Graham.

“Matt Rockey’s touchline conversion was magnificent but the win is totally down to the team’s total commitment.”
