Lymm 2nd 28 Wirral 5

IN what has been an extraordinarily successful season for the second team at Lymm, to become winners of their league cup was a fitting finale for skipper Adam Halford and his young team.

The bad tempered Lighting and Building Services Jug Final at Eccles on Saturday ended with Lymm facing antagonism with sportsmanship and courage.

Richard Halford was the man of the match but it was a team effort that has epitomised the performance all season that won the day and concluded a great campaign.

Scrum half Shard put Lymm 3-0 ahead from a well struck penalty early on but a well-executed try from the Wirral centres.

Lymm’s backs began to look increasingly dangerous with ball in hand but it was Shard again who eased them back into the lead with a penalty.

Following sustained pressure from Lymm a well worked passing sequence and break by full back Richard Halford fed right wing Jack Worton to go over for an unconverted try, 11-5.

More pressure, this time from an attacking line-out led to a perfect driving maul with hooker Dan Horton barrelling over! Shard converted, taking the half-time score to 18-5.

Wirral had little answer in the second half to Lymm’s efficiency and flair with Halford looking a class or two above the opposition in all he did.

A few try scoring opportunities were scorned but a penalty from fly half Rhys Jones extended the lead to 21-5.

Wirral became frustrated as the game came to its conclusion with two Wirral forwards being sent off for foul play.

Tom Baker, at scrum half, took his own revenge and scored the final well worked try.
