Firwood Waterloo 2nd 72 Warrington 2nd 5

A COMPREHENSIVE trouncing by a strong and experienced Waterloo outfit effectively put paid to Warrington’s hopes of promotion.

However, a very young Warrington side, which finished the game with only 13 players, stood up well to a relentless onslaught and even managed to claim the final score.

Waterloo had run up 40 points by half time.

Warrington were again on the back foot in the second period and their misery was compounded when they lost prop Steve Tickle with a facial wound and scrum half Ben Hockenhull with a dislocated elbow.

However, they were defiant to the end and Andy Buck scooted over for a late consolation try.

Warrington 3rd 18 Macclesfield 3rd 40

WARRINGTON’S third string competed strongly in an even first half but had no answer to Macclesfield’s backline in the second period.

Hooker Paul Thompson drove over from short range to open the scoring for Warrington, before Macclesfield started to set the pace and they soon scored from broken play.

Numerous opportunities were squandered by the visitors as they were restricted to one more converted try in the first period.

Warrington replied with a penalty from Matt Drinkwater, which meant that the sides turned round with four points separating them.

Relentless defence soon took its toll on Warrington and although a second Drinkwater penalty took them to within one point of their opponents, Macclesfield manufactured two good tries from broken play.

Warrington hit back with a superb individual effort from Matt Rockey but Macclesfield ran through a weary Warrington defence to score a fifth try before crossing for the final time after a turnover at a scrum.
