Warrington 12 Birkenhead Park 29

WARRINGTON were unable to claw back a 19-point interval deficit when they faced Birkenhead in North One West on Saturday.

Despite being depleted by injuries, they had the better of the opening exchanges.

But it was Park who broke through when a winger went over in the corner.

They went on to score twice more before the break.

Warrington began the second period with a strong wind at their backs, and took advantage by putting their first points on the board from the boot of Luke Wood.

Afterwards they started to play with confidence, combatting Park's rushing defence with an occasional chip over the top.

A perfect Tom Wood nudge forced Birkenhead into an error and the scrum half’s brother, Luke, duly claimed another three penalty points.

But Warrington’s recovery stalled when the visitors were awarded a penalty and after opting for a lineout, they bustled over a fourth try.

The hosts came back again with a 45-yard penalty from Luke Wood, but Park had the last word when they crossed for a fifth time following a quickly-taken tap penalty.

Warrington 3rd 12 Sefton 2nd 12

MATT Drinkwater saved Warrington from defeat at the hands of struggling Sefton in North West Intermediate League Division Two South on Saturday.

The hosts felt confident going into the game against a team that had recorded just three wins this season, but the visitors forged ahead with a converted try.

Warrington's pack had to withstand a battering from Sefton's eight but the front row of Steve Tickle, Tom Wray and Tom Stubbs stayed solid.

And their resistance was rewarded when Drinkwater slotted over the first of four penalties on the stroke of half-time.

The second period saw Warrington gain the upper hand with debutants Matt Wilkinson and Dave Manfredi to the fore, and it wasn’t long before Drinkwater added two further penalties.

The centre seemed to have closed the game for Warrington with another three-pointer 10 minutes from time, but Sefton replied with a try in the closing seconds to earn a share of the spoils.

Warrington go to Chester thirds on Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.
