FOR the most part, the rivers have been low and quiet recently but that looks set to change in a big way judging by the thunder storm which is raging as I write.
Warrington Anglers’ Association member Steve Plant’s recent red letter day, when he achieved his new personal best tench on feeder-fished red maggot, netted him the Bait Tech catch of the month prize of £100 worth of quality bait and a Korda fish-care kit.
The 9lbs tench was part of a trio of tench narrowly scraped in when our committee discussed the merits of the various entries.
We are running a Junior Open Match on Saturday at Ackers Pit to coincide with the Stockton Heath Festival. Consequently the fishery will be closed to members until 4pm.
The match is for young anglers aged 15 and under. Entry will be by ticket because the number of pegs is limited to 26.
Tickets are available from Cheshire Angling on Thelwall Lane, Latchford, priced at £2 but the entry fee will all be paid out in prizes for the winners. Anglers must be competent to fish unaided as it is a competition and not a coaching session.
Our junior and intermediate teams represented the club in the Angling Trust National championships at Cudmore last weekend. No trophies headed back to Warrington this time but they all did their best and enjoyed the experience.
One of our members had a nasty experience at Sandiway last week. He was enjoying the peace, quietly watching a family of swans sedately swimming around in the sun when three black Labradors and a golden retriever plunged into the lake next to his bivvy.
The swans became entangled in his rods and line and eventually caused it to snap which left the female dragging line behind her.
He shouted to the offending dog owner to control her dogs, which should have been on leads on the public footpath. The line has since been removed and the swans are un-injured.
There will be a work party at Bicton this weekend to upgrade the fencing, trim the car park and replace the gate so if anyone is interested in helping out please let me know.
Let me have your catch reports on 01928 716238, fax 01928 713898 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
HQ Parker Street will be open tomorrow, Friday, between 7pm and 9.30pm for subscriptions and new memberships.
