THREE members of Woolston Karate Club can now call themselves British champions.

A small but successful squad from the club, which is based at Woolston CofE Primary School, travelled down to London for the WUKF British Open and between them, they returned with 11 medals.

As such, the team are in fine form as they gear up for the WUKF European Championships in Warsaw, Poland, in October.

Among those were golds in team kata in the 15-17 age group for Jasmin Thomas, Ruby Owen and Keeva Wignall, who are all now British champions.

Ruby also brought home two silver medals in her shito ryu style of karate in both the 14-15 age group and the older 16-17 category.

Darron McQuillan won a silver in the 50+ open kata veterans category while there were two bronze medals for Rebecca Cameron in the senior kata and kumite events.

The Woolston group were joined in London by John Cameron, who was officiating over the weekend as one of the most highly qualified and respected referees in the country.
